Rules and Regulations

When National Honor Society was founded in 1921, the hope was to create an organization that would recognize & encourage academic achievement while developing other characteristics essential to citizens in a democrazy. These ideals of scholarship, character, service, and leadership remain as relevant as they were in 1921.

Now in it's 88th year, the National Honor Society has become a prestigious organization, ranking high among administrators, faculty members, students, parents, and residents of the school community. Its reputation for excellence is the result of years of commitment on the part of everyone involved. Through NHS chapter service activities, members maintain and extend the qualities that won them selection. Membership is thus both an honor and a commitment.

Members must be in good standing with OA-BCIG's good conduct policy. Violation of good conduct policy may result in punishment, probation, suspension, or expulsion. Violations may be dealt with by the chapter's officers and sponsor of with the help of parents and administration.

Members must also maintain a 3.25 cumulative GPA. Failure to do so may result in probation, suspension, or expulsion.

Community Service

The community service time requirement for members is 15 hours. If you helped with things this summer (Relay for Life, Bible School, Fair Grounds cleanup, ect.) up to five hours will count. I have recorded those who helped with can cages this summer. I would like any notes so my record keeping is up to date. Remember, if you do something because you have to, it will NOT count. If you do something because you volunteered, it counts.

It is my hope that members find opportunities they are interested in as an individual. Government required community service may count for NHS time also.

Purpose

Why is NHS important to the school? There are so many times we as a school ask our communities for things. We ask them to volunteer time, efforts, and money in various ways. This is an opportunity for our school to give something back to our communities. This organization is also another way for our school to recognize student achievement. There are many talents among the various members of our student body and this is one more way for us to reward and recognize their efforts and achievements.
