SUMMARY OF THE AUGUST 29, 2011 SPECIAL BOARD MEETING

OF THE BATTLE CREEK-IDA GROVE COMMUNITY SCHOOL DISTRICT

The Battle Creek-Ida Grove Community School District Board met in special session with the Odebolt-Arthur board on August 29, 2011 at 6:20 p.m. in the Board Room at the OA/BCIG High School in Ida Grove, Iowa.

Battle Creek-Ida Grove Board President, Duane Hummelgard called the meeting to order at 6:20 p.m. on behalf of the Battle Creek-Ida Grove board and the meeting was called to order on behalf of the Odebolt-Arthur board by Paul Neumann. A roll call was taken as follows: Mark Bogue, absent; Tony Bennett, present; Mike Andrews, present; Bev Bower, present; Duane Hummelgard, present, Michael Luft, absent; and Jeff Rasmussen, present.

It was moved by Andrews and seconded by Bower to approve the agenda as amended to add Caitlyn Wonder as Middle School paraeducator, BCIG Contract. The motion carried 5-0.

It was moved by Rasmussen and seconded by Bennett to approve claims to Blacktop Paving for intermediate building asphalt work and to Bobbe’s Décor for fire proof curtains installed at the elementary to comply with the state fire marshall report. The claims totaled $6,544. The motion carried 5-0.

It was moved by Bennett and seconded by Bower to approve the following contracts: Karen Petersen, paraeducator; Molly Hofmann, paraeducator; Julie Johnson, paraeducator; Cindy Wilcke, High School Student Council sponsor; Donna Rasmussen, .5 junior class sponsor and Caitlin Wonder, paraeducator. The motion carried 5-0.

It was moved by Rasmussen and seconded by Bennett to approve the All-Iowa Honor Dance Team Auditions on Sunday, Sept. 11 in Ames. The Sunday activity was requested due to student conflicts in other activities on Saturday. The motion carried 4-1 with Andrews voting no. The Odebolt-Arthur board passed the motion 4-0.

It was moved by Bennett and seconded by Rasmussen to adjourn. The motion carried 5-0 and the meeting was adjourned at 6:28 p.m.

OF THE BATTLE CREEK-IDA GROVE COMMUNITY SCHOOL DISTRICT

The Battle Creek-Ida Grove Community School District Board and the Odebolt-Arthur School Board met for a joint work session on August 29, 2011 at 6:30 p.m. in the Board Room of the OA/BCIG High School in Ida Grove, Iowa.

Battle Creek-Ida Grove Board members in attendance were: Duane Hummelgard, Mike Andrews, Bev Bower, Tony Bennett, Jeff Rasmussen. Michael Luft arrived at 6:45 p.m. Mark Bogue was absent. Also in attendance were Odebolt-Arthur board members Paul Neumann, Brad Lundell, Deb Bengford and Traci Bengford; Dr. Tim Grieves, chief administrator of Northwest AEA; Dr. Troyce Fisher, School Administrators of Iowa; Dani Trimble, Alan Henderson, Patrick Miller, Tony Spradlin, Jann Murphy, Kathy Leonard. Guests in attendance were Randy Miller, Pat Hoefling, Berny Sohm and Brian Riessen.

The group reviewed the "Iowa Did You Know" video as a way to frame the conversations, particularly the idea that districts need to think about preparing students for their future, not the past. The boards watched the video titled "For School Board Members," and watched videos from three school districts who have implemented some new educational programs.

It was stated that while each of the school examples involved new technology, the boards were careful to discuss the fact that this is not a conversation about technology but about understanding what changes districts might need to be talking about for preparing students to be career, college, and citizenship ready.

By consensus, board members decided to continue to discuss this topic at the next regular meeting.

The work session ended at 9:05 p.m.
