JOINT BOARD MEETING WITH

BCIG COMMUNITY SCHOOL DISTRICT

MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 12, 2011

6:30 P.M.

CONTRAL OFFICE-IDA GROVE 

 

            The Odebolt-Arthur (OA) Community School Board of Education met in joint session with the Battle Creek Ida Grove (BCIG) Community School Board of Education on the above date and time.  The following members were present: Deb Bengford, Paul Neumann, Traci Bengford, Naomi Lozier, Brad Lundell, Dani Trimble, Tony Spradlin, and Jann Murphy.  

 

            President Neumann called the meeting to order at 6:30 p.m.

           

            President Neumann read the OA Mission Statement: As an agent of the community and society, the Odebolt-Arthur SchoolÕs purpose is to provide an environment where all persons shall develop life skills by learning to learn.

 

            A motion was made by Lozier, seconded by D. Bengford to approve the agenda with the addition of $3,054.09 to the September Payables.  All Ayes.  Motion Carried.  (5-0)

 

            BCIG Board President Duane Hummelgard welcomed all visitors.

 

            At this time the Board heard public comments from Don Winterrowd of Ida Grove.

 

            A motion was made by D. Bengford, seconded by T. Bengford, to approve the consent agenda, items, which included the following:

1)         Minutes; August 8, 2011 Regular Meeting; August 29, 2011 Special Meeting.

2)         Current Payables;

3)         Financial Reports;

4)         Resignations;

5)         Contract Approvals

6)         Out of State / Overnight Trips;

 All Ayes.  Motion Carried.  (5-0)

 

At this time the Boards heard a director report from BCIG mechanic Kevin Weber.  He reviewed the bids for a BCIG support vehicle.

 

Pat Miller, OA-BCIG High School Principal discussed the staff use of interactive boards and stated the AEA will be working with the staff to explain ways students can us cell phones in the classroom.  Bailie Kies and Casey Ludwig shared a service learning project they are working on at the neighboring Golden Horizons Assisted Living.  They are planning to do activities throughout the year with the 18 residents.  Mr. Miller concluded by informing the board that the CNA class is being taught at the assisted living. 

 

Dani Trimble, Superintendent, informed the Boards of a new professional development activity she will be participating in during the school year.  She invited the board to tour the high school after the meeting to see recent updates.

 

Tony Spradlin, OA Elementary/OA-BCIG Middle School Principal reviewed his article from the September newsletter, discussed differentiated instruction, reading recovery and Title I.  He informed the Boards on how PAT and QRI are being administered and how they utilize the information.  Mr. Spradlin concluded with a list of Middle School Student Council members and the many different committees.   

 

Under Dialog and action items:

 

            At this time the Boards held a discussion on the work session they held with Dr. Fisher and Dr. Grieves.  They covered the following three topics:

 1. Reactions and questions from board members and administration.

 2. What can the boards do to support this work? 

 3. What are our next steps for this work?

 

            A motion was made by Lundell, seconded by Lozier to approve the Annual Progress Report.  All Ayes. Motion Carried. (5-0)

 

            A motion was made by T. Bengford, seconded by Lozier to approve the following Sunday activities.  Ayes-3, Nay- 2 with Lozier and D. Bengford voting No.  Motion Carried.  (3-2)

           

á      Athletic teams - Sunday if they qualify for a state event

á      Wrestling - Sunday if they qualify for state as a team or individual to help them maintain weight

á      Football - Sunday practices for as long as they are involved in the playoffs

á      All-State Speech qualification in the spring - leaving on Sunday afternoon and staying overnight on Sunday night

á      Mock Trial - Sunday if competition is scheduled on Monday

á      For those events where try outs fall ONLY on Sunday or for those who cannot avoid a conflict on the alternative date. For example, there may be students in volleyball that would also try out for All Iowa Dance.

á      Groups that need to leave on a Sunday if travel time and event dictate (i.e. National FFA Convention in Indianapolis)

 

Other Discussion:

 

The Board received a Thank you from the Odebolt-Arthur alumni banquet committee.  Mark Bogue, BCIG board member thanked Deb Bengford for her time and dedication to the Odebolt-Arthur School Board. 

 

            The next regular board meeting will be held Monday, October 10, 2011 at 6:30 p.m. in the Conference Room in Odebolt

 

            A Motion was made by Lozier, seconded by T. Bengford to adjourn the meeting at 8:10p.m.  All Ayes.  Motion Carried.  (5-0).
