Today, Odebolt Elementary hosted its 𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐲 𝐟𝐢𝐫𝐬𝐭 𝐒𝐩𝐞𝐥𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐁𝐞𝐞 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐬𝐭𝐮𝐝𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐬 𝐢𝐧 𝐠𝐫𝐚𝐝𝐞𝐬 1–5, and what an exciting event it was!
During the second week of February, classroom teachers held written spelling tests featuring 25 𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐝𝐬 𝐟𝐫𝐨𝐦 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐒𝐜𝐫𝐢𝐩𝐩𝐬 𝐍𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐒𝐩𝐞𝐥𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐁𝐞𝐞 𝐬𝐭𝐮𝐝𝐲 𝐥𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐬. From those tests, the 𝐭𝐨𝐩 𝐭𝐰𝐨 𝐬𝐩𝐞𝐥𝐥𝐞𝐫𝐬 𝐢𝐧 𝐞𝐚𝐜𝐡 𝐜𝐥𝐚𝐬𝐬𝐫𝐨𝐨𝐦 𝐚𝐝𝐯𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞𝐝 to represent their class in the Spelling Bee.
To prepare for the big competition, students studied an impressive 𝐥𝐢𝐬𝐭 𝐨𝐟 450 𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐝𝐬 in hopes of spelling their way to the top! Their dedication and hard work were truly impressive.
👏 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐠𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐮𝐥𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬 𝐭𝐨 𝐚𝐥𝐥 𝐨𝐟 𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐧𝐭𝐬 for earning a spot in the school competition. You represented your classrooms well and showed great courage speaking into the microphone!
🏆 𝐀 𝐬𝐩𝐞𝐜𝐢𝐚𝐥 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐠𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐮𝐥𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬 𝐭𝐨 𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐟𝐢𝐫𝐬𝐭-𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐫 𝐎𝐝𝐞𝐛𝐨𝐥𝐭 𝐒𝐩𝐞𝐥𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐁𝐞𝐞 𝐂𝐡𝐚𝐦𝐩𝐢𝐨𝐧 — 𝐇𝐚𝐫𝐥𝐨𝐰 𝐘𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐠𝐫𝐞𝐧!
Harlow now has the opportunity to advance and participate in the 𝐑𝐞𝐠𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐒𝐩𝐞𝐥𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐁𝐞𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐒𝐚𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐝𝐚𝐲 𝐚𝐭 𝐋𝐢𝐯𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐇𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐲 𝐅𝐚𝐫𝐦𝐬 𝐢𝐧 𝐔𝐫𝐛𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐚𝐥𝐞, 𝐈𝐨𝐰𝐚.
Best of luck to Harlow, and great job to 𝐚𝐥𝐥 𝐨𝐟 𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐚𝐦𝐚𝐳𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐬𝐩𝐞𝐥𝐥𝐞𝐫𝐬 who made this event such a success! 🐝✨

Our K–5 students had a blast this week celebrating 𝐑𝐞𝐚𝐝 𝐀𝐜𝐫𝐨𝐬𝐬 𝐀𝐦𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐜𝐚 with a fun 𝐌𝐲𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐲 𝐑𝐞𝐚𝐝𝐞𝐫 𝐂𝐡𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐞𝐧𝐠𝐞! Throughout the week, students watched a faceless video and tried to guess who the mystery readers might be.
Today, the big moment finally arrived! Students gathered in the gym where the mystery readers—hidden behind some pretty creative animal masks— sat while students were given three clues about each reader. After students locked in their guesses, the readers revealed their identity by removing their masks! 🐷🐼🐴🐶
The room was filled with excitement, laughter, and plenty of surprised reactions as students discovered which familiar faces had been reading to them all along. Activities like this make reading even more fun and help build a love for books across our schools.
A big thank you to all of our mystery readers for helping make Read Across America Week such a memorable experience for our students! 📖✨

OABCIG Odebolt Elementary is celebrating 📚 𝐑𝐞𝐚𝐝 𝐀𝐜𝐫𝐨𝐬𝐬 𝐀𝐦𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐜𝐚 𝐖𝐞𝐞𝐤 with stories, surprises, and special guests!
We were excited to kick off the week by welcoming 𝐃𝐞𝐛 𝐑𝐞𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐠 from the 𝐒𝐚𝐜 𝐂𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐭𝐲 𝐅𝐚𝐫𝐦 𝐁𝐮𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐮, who shared Full of Beans: Henry Ford Grows a Car by Peggy Thomas with our K–5 students. This nonfiction book highlights Henry Ford’s innovative idea to create a car using soybean-based plastics during the Great Depression—showcasing his passion for agriculture, creativity, and sustainability. What a wonderful way to connect farming, history, and innovation for our students!
The fun doesn’t stop there! Students are also enjoying 𝐭𝐰𝐨 𝐌𝐲𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐲 𝐑𝐞𝐚𝐝𝐞𝐫 𝐯𝐢𝐝𝐞𝐨𝐬 𝐞𝐚𝐜𝐡 𝐝𝐚𝐲, trying to guess which OABCIG staff member is behind the book — think 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘔𝘢𝘴𝘬𝘦𝘥 𝘚𝘪𝘯𝘨𝘦𝘳 excitement with a grand reveal happening Friday morning! 🎭📖
A special thank you to 𝐃𝐢𝐚𝐧𝐞 𝐒𝐜𝐡𝐮𝐥𝐭𝐞 for the beautiful bulletin board display that brightens the halls at the Odebolt building. Her creativity helps make weeks like this even more special and inviting for our students.

🎭 Opera Iowa performed The Three Billy Goat Gruff Opera by Mozart, Rossini and Donizett on Friday, February 27th to K-5 students from the OABCIG District. The plot of the story was “We will be fair and kind and true to each and everyone no matter who”, which was the chorus of a song that students got to join in and sing.🎶 The troupe did two workshops before the show with upper elementary students. The 4th graders workshop was Let’s Make an Opera, and 5th graders were Singers and Vocal Styles. A huge thank you to Des Moines Metro Opera for bringing this wonderful experience to our students! 👏✨
