In Module 4 of Wit and Wisdom the Ida Grove 3rd graders learned about different art and artists. We studied the artist Jackson Pollock who was very famous for his abstract drip painting that he created outside or in his barn. Our classes tried to experience what it would be like to paint outside and make an abstract painting. We had a lot of fun getting messy and being artists!

OABCIG High School mentors and their OABCIG Ida Grove elementary mentees enjoyed an hour of skating at the Ida Grove Skate Palace recently. Ninety students are involved in the program, which matches select high schoolers with elementary students who would benefit from the extra support and encouragement a high school "buddy" can provide. 'Matches' met weekly at the elementary school.

Doesn’t every child dream of being a prince or princess? Well, our first graders got the chance to live out that dream for one day. We ended our last Wit and Wisdom Reading Module of the year by having a Prince and Princess Ball. With all the fun, we also encourage them to learn. The First graders read Cinderella stories from all around the world. Through these different tales of Cinderella, the first graders deepened their vocabulary, knowledge of common story elements, and similar themes. What is amazing is that the first graders learned people around the world all admire Cinderella even when the story elements change. This taught them some life lessons to never give up and to always be kind. The students were able to have their picture taken with their favorite Cinderella story and will be writing an opinion story about their choice. Learning can be fun!!! For the Ball, the first graders dressed up like princes and princesses and even did a regal walk through the elementary hallways. Once at the ball the students enjoyed a royal feast, which was a snack and drink. A very big shout out and thank you to our PTP!! They provided the decorations and refreshments for the ball. For entertainment, the students watched the movie Cinderella. For added fun, our activity teachers got involved and did Prince and Princess activities in their classrooms throughout the week. The students made crowns in Art, listened to more story versions of Cinderella in the Library, sang princess songs in Music, and played prince and princess themed games in Technology. It was a week filled with a common theme but focused on learning while having fun. The first graders learned a lot and many of them said it was the best day ever! As a teacher, that made all the hard work worth it, we do this always for the students! Thank you to everyone who made this a success for the first graders.

OABCIG first graders went on their annual Spring field trip to Moorehead Park. The first graders did three centers. The first center was with Naturalist Danielle and she took the students on a hike to learn all about birds in their natural environment. They even got to use binoculars. Then the next center was a nature journal where the students used magnifying glasses to observe and investigate the area around them. Then the students recorded their observations in their journal. The last center was entitled "Bird Beak Buffet" a hands-on-activity that the students used various tools that acted as a bird's beak to see which worked best to get a certain bird's food in the various environments. The first graders learned so much and we are so lucky to have such a great resource in our district.

Third graders at Ida Grove learned more about how math and art combine in tessellations, which are patterns that fit together with no gaps. After learning more about tessellations in nature and the works of M. C. Escher, students tried their hands at making tessellations of their own.

The Ida Grove First Grade students performed ‘Contraction Surgery”. The students became word surgeons as they learned how to make contractions! The students had masks, gloves, and hats to be able to dress the part of a surgeon (Donated by Megan Wellendorf). Mrs. Nielsen’s high school students came to assist us during the activity. Thank you Mrs. Nielsen’s high schoolers. Students worked carefully cutting the words apart and surgically removing letters in order to shorten the two words into a contraction. Each doctor was equipped with the knowledge and skills needed to form words like "I'll", "They're", and "Wouldn't". All of the surgeons were very successful and everyone had a fun learning experience.

The OABCIG 5th Grade had a busy day! They started their morning with a reading challenge celebration. If they read 1,000 pages, they got to enjoy a morning at the Ida Grove Rec Center. There was swimming, volleyball, basketball, games, and a treat provided by both PTP groups. In the afternoon, we were invited to Horn Memorial Hospital to have our annual Arbor Day presentation with the USDA Office. We heard from them about importance of Arbor Day and planting trees. Then we went out to the hospital grounds to plant the first of many apple trees that our 5th grade classes will add to their growing apple orchard. Thank you for asking us to be apart of this new tradition!
